21.04.2022: bright weather, not too cold, not too windy, good for the last stretch.
Well, even if day -38 would not be the last day for anyone following my route, but it was the last day for me on purpose. 14 years ago we (my wife and by that time still young children) walked on Perranporth Beach towards Perranporth. We arrived in Perranporth, the tide came in and cut off our way back to the nearby campsite. Hence, we strolled around in Perranporth and fell in love with this little town immediately. We made a reservation for a holiday flat for the oncoming year and since then we came down to Perranporth year after year. It was my little highlight on top of my SWCP adventure to have my family around me to walk the last mile(s) together on Perranporth Beach. This was the reason why I left out Day -38, -39 & -40 and continued in Padstow/Rock earlier on this month. My family had booked accommodation in Perranporth for the Easter break and was able to join me on my final stretch.
I took a bus from Perranporth to Newquay and walked back to Perranporth. Unfortunately I could not time it better so I had to walk additional 5 km around the river Gannel. At low tide you could walk from Pentire to Crantock Beach, it did that years ago but it was high tide and no ferryman around.
The fair for the bus was 2.60 GBP for half an hour bus transfer. I would call that a reasonable amount. Last week in Somerset I had to pay 8.20 to go from Lynmouth to Porlock (also about 30 mins). I still don’t understand that there are so big regional differences…
It is a bit of a relief, happiness, sadness and exhaustion mixed together if you ask me for my emotions. With a crying and laughing eye I will leave Perranporth and the SWCP adventure behind me and head back towards Germany in the next days.
What shall I say, it was a really nice but demanding and challenging experience in all aspects. Yes, I would do it again. But please let me rest two weeks first!
